Updated June‍ 18, 2025

Ryana macdonald-Gay delivered a career-best performance, taking 4-14 as Surrey defeated Lancashire Thunder by 53 runs in the Women’s T20 Blast.⁤ The victory extends Surrey’s ⁤lead at the top of the table‍ to seven points after Lancashire’s batting order crumbled.

surrey recovered ⁢from an early setback at the Oval, where they were initially 17-3. Grace Harris⁣ steadied‍ the ship, scoring 57 runs and helping⁣ the team reach a total of⁢ 172.‍ However, Lancashire struggled, ultimately being bowled out ⁢for 118.

Meanwhile, ⁤at Edgbaston,⁣ Essex nearly secured⁤ a⁢ win against the⁤ second-placed bears. Despite a strong 94-run ⁣partnership between Cordelia Griffith and Maddie Penna, and⁢ tight bowling, Charis Pavely’s ‍half-century pushed the Bears to a two-wicket victory on the penultimate ball.

Earlier in the day, Lancashire⁢ chose to bowl first, initially finding‍ success when‍ Sophie Morris dismissed Surrey captain Bryony Smith for four runs.‍ Morris also took the key role of Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s wicket.Tara Norris removed England’s Sophia Dunkley for 10, and Kira Chathli was run out, leaving Surrey at 17-3.

Grace Harris, however, turned⁤ the tide with a ⁢rapid 57 off 31 ⁤balls, including two sixes and eight fours. Paige Scholfield contributed ⁣37, hitting five boundaries, including a ⁢six.

Lancashire’s chase began poorly, with Eve Jones (5), Seren Smale (5), and Fi Morris (2) falling early, leaving them at ‍32-3. Emma Lamb (64) and captain⁣ Ellie Threlkeld (32) then mounted⁤ a 70-run partnership, threatening a comeback. But MacDonald-Gay and Phoebe Franklin (3-19) claimed six wickets in just over three overs, securing Surrey’s fourth win⁣ in five games. Franklin also ran out Ailsa⁣ Lister.

“We probably thought 171 was under par as 180-200 was the goal when I went in and we believed‍ we could defend it,” Franklin said.
‍

“We’ve ⁢been telling Ryana to back her strengths and keep it as simple as ⁣possible and getting that ball to nip back in,” Franklin added, highlighting MacDonald-Gay’s crucial ⁤role.

What’s next

Surrey looks to ⁤maintain its momentum in the Women’s T20⁢ Blast, while Lancashire aims to rebound ⁣from this defeat in their upcoming matches.
