Gallery of Modern Art Explores Wonderstruck Exhibit

A cardboard archway marks the entrance to “Wonderstruck,” a free exhibition at Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane. The exhibit explores wonder through human experience,nature and spirituality.
Tasmin Cull and Laura mudge, co-curators, believe experiencing wonder is vital, especially now. Cull said it allows peopel to empathize with shared human experiences and the planet.
The exhibition features over 100 works from QAGOMA’s collection, including large installations and smaller pieces. Noted artists Patricia Piccinini, Ron Mueck and Michael Parekōwhai are among those featured.
Tobias Putrih’s “Connection” leads into a gallery filled with color, texture and pattern. Pip & Pop’s “Rainbow Bridge” offers miniature fantasy worlds.
The “Wonderstruck” exhibit also includes the divine.The Kwaia koromb, a small spirit house by the Kwoma arts Collective, offers a space for reflection. The collective includes Simon Goiyap, Anton Waiawas, Kevin Apsepa, Terry Pakiey, Nelson Makamoi, jamie jimok and Rex Maukos.
Sandra Selig’s “mid-air” installation features styrofoam balls on delicate threads, creating the illusion of floating.
The exhibition includes work by more than 60 artists, including Ah Xian, Gordon Hookey, Madeleine Kelly, Yvonne Koolmatrie, Judy watson and Louise Weaver.The works are spaced to allow close viewing.
“Wonderstruck” provides a break from reality, reminding visitors that wonder exists in everyday moments. The point, according to the gallery, is to return to the ordinary with new perspectives.
