EVERGLADES CITY, Fla. – A chaotic scene unfolded in the Everglades Friday afternoon as two airboats carrying a total of 33 passengers collided, leaving 16 people injured and requiring hospitalization.
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. near the popular Wooten’s Everglades Airboat Tours location.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, encountering a scene of debris and injured passengers.
“It was a pretty significant impact,” said a witness who wished to remain anonymous. “People were shaken up, some with visible injuries.”
The injured were transported to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers are investigating the cause of the collision.
“We are working to determine exactly what happened,” said an FWC spokesperson. “Our priority right now is ensuring the well-being of those involved and conducting a thorough investigation.”
Wooten’s Everglades airboat Tours, a well-known attraction in the area, has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.
