Rain Denies Warwickshire Victory in county Championship Derby
Updated May 27, 2025
Warwickshire’s hopes for a County Championship victory were dashed at New Road as persistent rain brought an early end to their derby against Worcestershire. Warwickshire needed just two more wickets to seal the win.
Worcestershire, chasing a target of 327, were struggling at 181-8 when bad light initially forced the players off the field shortly before tea. The anticipated Warwickshire victory was then washed away as rain prevented any further play, wiping out the remaining 47 overs.
Worcestershire resumed the final day at 54-2, but quickly faltered against the bowling attack spearheaded by Chris Rushworth, who returned from injury to take 3-30, and Chris Woakes, who also claimed 3-53. The County Championship match seemed destined for a Warwickshire win.
However, Matthew Waite, with an unbeaten 44, Ethan Brookes, who scored 34, and Tom Taylor, batting at number 10, showed resilience. Their resistance frustrated Warwickshire and ultimately secured a draw for Worcestershire.
The conditions were challenging for batting, with a tough pitch and heavy cloud cover adding to the pressure from Woakes and Rushworth. Worcestershire’s top order crumbled on the final morning.
Rushworth trapped Gareth Roderick lbw for 37, and Woakes removed Kashif Ali, caught by Beau Webster at second slip. Worcestershire then slumped further as Brett D’Oliveira hit a Rushworth half-volley to long leg, and Ed barnard found Rob Jones’ edge, giving wicketkeeper Kai Smith a catch to make it 87-6.
Waite and Brookes combined solid defence with selective aggression, adding 61 runs off 63 balls before Brookes was bowled by Ethan Bamber. Woakes then had Ben Allison caught behind, but Taylor partnered with Waite to hold on for another 38 minutes until the weather intervened.
Warwickshire were left ruing the lost prospect, notably given Sam Hain’s remarkable batting performance, scoring 86 and an unbeaten 87 on a challenging pitch where only one other player reached 50. The Warwickshire team felt they deserved the victory.
Worcestershire, however, may see this draw, following their win against Essex the previous week, as a sign of improved fortunes this season.
