World AIDS Day 2023: Empowering Women Living with HIV – Insights and Awareness
World AIDS Day Highlights Impact of HIV on Women
World AIDS Day emphasizes the effects of HIV on women. This year, the theme is, “Take the rights path: My health, my right”.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that human rights must be central. They encourage communities to lead efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The WHO urges global leaders and citizens to promote health rights. Addressing inequalities is key to combatting the AIDS epidemic.
In Ireland, at least one in three people with HIV are women. Stephen O’Hare, Executive Director of HIV Ireland, notes that discussions about HIV often focus on men, particularly gay and bisexual men. He stresses that women rarely receive the same attention.
Women with HIV report difficulties discussing their condition. Many find it hard to confide in others or be open about their status.
HIV is a virus that weakens the body’s immune system. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the final stage of HIV infection. As the immune system weakens, those infected are at risk of severe infections and cancers.
There is no cure for HIV, but treatment can significantly lower the virus levels in the body. Effective treatment also prevents transmission to others.
With enough support and attention, we can create a more informed society that empowers women living with HIV.
