World AIDS Day 2023: Remembering, Supporting, and Raising Awareness – December 2nd
On World AIDS Day, I join President Biden and Vice President Harris in urging global action to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The State Department has worked hard over the past four years to save lives through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This program has transformed the HIV/AIDS crisis. It supports over 20 million people receiving life-saving treatment in 55 countries. Studies show that PEPFAR’s work leads to economic growth in these partner countries. It is crucial to pass a clean, five-year reauthorization of PEPFAR to sustain our success and empower communities.
World AIDS Day reminds us of the 42 million lives lost to HIV/AIDS. This highlights the ongoing threat of the virus. We must help partner countries develop their vision and capacity to combat this disease. Together, we can create safe and thriving communities by eliminating HIV/AIDS as a public health threat.
