Taiwan’s Boxing Queen Lin Yuting Withdraws from Competition

On November 30, 2024, Lin Yuting, a celebrated boxer from Taiwan, withdrew from a World Boxing Federation (WB) year-end competition in the UK. This decision came after questions about her eligibility arose during a technical meeting.

Lin, who secured a gold medal in women’s 57kg boxing at the Paris Olympics, traveled to the UK for the tournament. However, following discussions with her coach, Zeng Zhiqiang, and officials from the Boxing Association, the team decided it was best to withdraw.

World Boxing Federation President Boris van der Vorst expressed his regret over Lin’s situation. During a pre-match break, he met with sports officials and apologized for the incident, acknowledging Lin’s absence. Van der Vorst promised to improve regulations and standards regarding gender policy testing in the sport.

The WB will collaborate with experts from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to enhance these testing guidelines. A meeting is scheduled for January 2025, where player coaches and medical teams will also be consulted.

In the same competition, only Huang Xiaowen represented Taiwan, competing in the women’s 54kg category against Mongolian athlete Yesugen Woinsetseg.
