World Boxing Provisionally Recognized by IOC, Boosting Los Angeles 2028 Hopes
Updated June 01, 2025
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted provisional recognition to World Boxing as the international
governing body for the sport. This decision marks a significant step toward boxing’s potential inclusion in the
los Angeles 2028 Olympic program. The future of Olympic boxing and the establishment of a credible global
institution were key factors in the IOC’s assessment.
Boxing’s place in the Olympics was jeopardized after the International Boxing Association (IBA), previously the
sport’s governing body, faced suspension in 2019 due to issues related to governance, finance, refereeing, and
ethical conduct. The IOC oversaw boxing at the past two Olympic Games following the suspension. The IBA, led by
Russia, was ultimately stripped of its recognition in June 2023 because it failed to implement necesary
reforms.
World Boxing was established in April 2023 and has since garnered 78 member federations across five continents,
including Great Britain. The IOC stated that World Boxing has demonstrated progress in addressing the areas of
concern.
according to the IOC, World boxing met key criteria for provisional recognition. These include securing a
sufficient number of member federations across five continents, implementing sports integrity measures during the
Paris 2024 Games, providing independent oversight and sound governance structures, ensuring revenue transparency,
and adhering to the world Anti-Doping Code.
What’s next
World Boxing will continue working with the IOC to meet all requirements for full recognition, solidifying
boxing’s place in future Olympic Games and ensuring a fair and ethical habitat for athletes.
