World ⁢darts Championship Expands Field⁣ and Women’s Role

Updated June 17, 2025

The Professional Darts corporation (PDC) announced a new qualifying structure for the 2025-26 World Darts Championship, guaranteeing a⁤ larger field and increased portrayal for women in the sport. The expansion aims to provide more opportunities for players from various ⁤tours ⁢to compete ⁢on a prominent stage, enhancing the ⁢role of women in darts.

The upcoming championship at Alexandra Palace in London will feature 128 players, a significant increase from the 96 participants in‍ the 2024-25 event. The winner will take home £1 million from a total prize⁤ pool of £5 million. This expansion ‌of the World Darts Championship provides⁢ a larger role for players worldwide.

In a change to the tournament structure, seeded players, including current champion Luke ‌Littler and Premier League winner Luke Humphries, will now enter in‌ the ⁣first round. The top 32 seeds will be joined by players ranked ⁤33-64, who will be randomly‍ drawn against the remaining 64 qualifiers on the⁢ left side of‌ the bracket.

At least four women ⁤will participate in the 128-player field. These spots will be awarded to the winner of the PDC Women’s ⁤World Matchplay, along with ‌the top three players from the PDC Women’s Series: the winner, runner-up, and third-place finisher. This ensures a greater role for women in the competition.

Previously, the highest number of women⁣ competing in a single⁣ year was three, achieved in 2022-23 when ‍Lisa ‌Ashton, Fallon Sherrock, and Beau Greaves all participated. Gayl King was the first woman to compete in the World Championship in 2000-01. Sherrock made history in 2019-20 as the first woman to win a match at the tournament.

What’s next

The 2025-26 World Darts Championship, set to begin in December and conclude in ‍early January, promises an exciting competition‍ with a broader⁣ field and increased ‌opportunities for players worldwide, especially enhancing the role of⁢ women in professional darts.
