The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that unsafe food causes approximately 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths every year. According to data released June 4, 2026, children under five face nearly three times the risk of illness compared to adults, while chemical hazards drive 73% of all food-related deaths.

These findings come from the 2026 edition of the WHO Foodborne Disease Estimates. The report was mandated by World Health Assembly Resolution WHA 73.5 to provide updated global incidence and mortality figures for 42 infectious and chemical hazards in food.

Why are young children at higher risk from contaminated food?

Children under the age of five are disproportionately affected by foodborne diseases. Despite making up only 9% of the global population, this age group accounts for nearly one third of all foodborne illness cases, according to the WHO.

Why are young children at higher risk from contaminated food?

Diarrhoeal diseases are particularly dangerous for these vulnerable populations. Beyond biological threats, the WHO report highlights that exposure to chemical hazards like lead and methylmercury can cause lifelong neurological and developmental problems by harming the developing brain.

How do chemical hazards compare to biological hazards?

There is a stark contrast between what causes foodborne illness and what causes foodborne death. Biological hazards, including viruses, bacteria, and parasitic infections, are responsible for the vast majority of illnesses, totaling approximately 860 million cases in 2021.

However, chemical exposures are far more lethal. Chemical hazards accounted for 73% of deaths due to contaminated food in 2021. The WHO identified two primary drivers of these fatalities:

  • Inorganic arsenic, which linked to 42% of chemical-related deaths.
  • Lead, which linked to 31% of chemical-related deaths.

The organization noted that these specific chemical exposures increase the risk of cancers and heart disease.

What is the economic impact of foodborne diseases?

The public health burden translates into significant global economic loss. The WHO estimates that foodborne disease led to about US$ 310 billion in lost productivity in 2021 due to time away from work.

When the WHO adjusted this figure for cost-of-living differences between various countries, the estimated loss in productivity increased to US$ 647 billion.

Food safety is not an abstract issue – it touches every meal, every family, every day.

Where is the burden highest and how can it be prevented?

While the overall burden of foodborne disease has declined since 2000, the WHO report emphasizes that major regional inequalities remain. The highest burdens of disease are currently found in South-East Asia and Africa.

The WHO states that many of these illnesses and deaths are preventable. Recommended measures to reduce the global burden include:

  • Improving sanitation, hygiene, and water quality.
  • Implementing food safety practices such as pasteurization.
  • Increasing access to health care for vulnerable populations.

The 2026 estimates supersede all previous WHO global burden reports. The organization intends to regularly update the underlying databases to track time trends for the 42 monitored hazards.
