The World Snooker‌ Tour remains tight-lipped about specific compensation for⁤ referees. Though, for ⁣some, the snooker referee⁤ role is a year-round commitment, involving⁢ extensive travel around the ⁢globe. In addition ⁤to officiating regular tour matches, referees can supplement their‍ income ‍by overseeing exhibition⁣ matches.

During snooker’s boom ⁤in the 1980s, referees like Len Ganley achieved near-celebrity⁢ status. Mike Ganley, World Snooker Tour ‍tournament director and Len’s son, noted ‌his father’s⁣ popularity translated to lucrative exhibition opportunities. “Len made good money from the exhibitions because for whatever reason he did have⁣ a profile, and an ego and⁣ a personality that whent with it,” Mike Ganley said.

Despite the travel⁤ and obligation,a referee’s base pay is generally considered modest, especially when⁣ compared to the earnings of top players. Ben woollaston’s World Championship earnings, a minimum of £30,000 for reaching the second round with the⁢ champion collecting⁢ £500,000, will likely surpass any referee’s income for the 17-day tournament.

At the World Championship in Sheffield, the Woollaston family experienced the tournament from different⁤ perspectives. ‍While Ben Woollaston prepared for his second-round match against Si Jiahui, his wife, Tatiana, was back at work refereeing the match between Mark Allen and Chris Wakelin.⁣ During that match, Allen achieved a maximum 147 break, a career highlight for Tatiana as she retrieved the black ball.

What’s next

As the World‌ Snooker Championship progresses, the role of the referee ⁢will continue to be vital, ensuring fair play and upholding the ⁣integrity of the sport. While the financial rewards may not match those of the top players, the experience and travel opportunities offer a unique career path.
