The sinking of‌ the USS Indianapolis and the subsequent shark attack stands as one of the most harrowing wartime ‌accounts.⁢ In the summer of 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a Portland-class heavy cruiser, embarked ⁢on a top-secret mission. It carried components for “Little Boy,”⁢ the nuclear weapon destined for Hiroshima,‍ from San Francisco to⁣ Tinian Island.

After‌ delivering its cargo, the USS Indianapolis continued toward the Philippines. On July 30th,at 00:15,the Japanese submarine I-58 struck. Two torpedoes hit the shipS starboard side, causing it to sink in just 12 minutes. Approximately 300 crewmen went down with the ship. Around 900 sailors were left stranded in the Pacific Ocean with limited​ life jackets and rafts, facing a terrifying new threat: sharks.
