World of Warcraft players are entering the final stretch of preparation for the Midnight expansion with the release of the second pre-expansion content update. Blizzard Entertainment rolled out the update on February 10, bringing with it a wave of class adjustments and quality-of-life improvements designed to refine the player experience before the full expansion launch.

The update focuses on two key areas: class tuning and user interface enhancements. According to Blizzard, the changes are intended to ensure players can “refine their rotation, dial in their interface, or just prepare for what’s ahead.” While the initial Midnight pre-expansion content update, released on January 20, introduced the Devourer Demon Hunter specialization and overhauled the transmogrification system, this second update is largely focused on balance and usability.

Class Adjustments: A Broad Sweep

The most significant changes center around class balance. Blizzard has implemented tuning adjustments across all classes, with some receiving substantial buffs and nerfs. Unholy Death Knights experienced a 32% reduction in ability damage, while Beast Mastery Hunters saw a 12% nerf across the board. Conversely, Blood Death Knights received a significant boost, with buffs exceeding 15%. These adjustments, Blizzard notes, are part of an ongoing effort to ensure a competitive and balanced landscape for all classes.

Beyond raw damage numbers, the update also revisits Hero Talents, reworking them to further refine class specializations. Specifically, the Deathbringer Hero Talent for Frost Death Knights saw increases to the damage of its first scythe strike (30%) and Reaper’s Mark (25%). Swift and Painful, another Death Knight talent, now increases Strength by 8% when Soul Rupture doesn’t strike any enemies, up from 5%. These changes demonstrate a granular approach to talent adjustments, aiming to provide more meaningful choices and impactful builds.

Blizzard has indicated that the adjustments to Rider of the Apocalypse and Deathbringer are aimed at bringing the two talents closer in power, reducing the gap between them. All Horsemen damage was reduced by 65% as part of this effort.

User Interface Improvements: Beyond Damage Meters

The update extends beyond class mechanics to address usability concerns within the game’s interface. Significant improvements have been made to Damage Meters, now capable of tracking enemy damage taken and providing detailed death recaps. Critically, session data will now persist between logins, eliminating the need to re-establish tracking after each play session. This addresses a long-standing request from players who rely on these tools for performance analysis.

Raid frames have also received attention, with default sizes increased and customizable background colors added. These changes aim to improve clarity and situational awareness during raid encounters, a crucial element of end-game content. The update also includes improvements to Boss Alerts, further enhancing the information available to players during challenging encounters.

Content Accessibility and Preparation for Midnight

Alongside the class and UI changes, Blizzard is re-opening access to several dungeons on Normal difficulty: Pit of Saron, Skyreach, and Al’gethar Academy. Heroic and Mythic versions of these dungeons will unlock with the launch of Midnight Season 1. This provides players with an opportunity to re-familiarize themselves with these instances and prepare for the challenges ahead.

The release of the Devourer Demon Hunter specialization in the initial pre-expansion patch remains a key component of the Midnight expansion. This new specialization offers a unique playstyle, utilizing the power of the Void instead of the traditional Fel energy employed by other Demon Hunters. Void Elf Demon Hunters are now also accessible through a dedicated quest line, expanding character customization options.

The transmogrification system overhaul, also introduced in the first patch, continues to be a significant quality-of-life improvement. The ability to apply appearances to gear slots rather than individual items eliminates the frustration of losing transmogs when upgrading equipment, allowing players to create and manage dozens of “outfits” for their characters.

The current update notes, available on the official World of Warcraft website, provide a comprehensive list of all changes. Blizzard emphasizes that this update is a crucial step in preparing for the launch of Midnight, offering players the opportunity to refine their builds, customize their interfaces, and gear up for the challenges that lie ahead.
