The dark fantasy auto-battler Wretch: Divine Ascent has launched a significant update, version 1.2.0, today, . The update coincides with the game’s participation in the Steam PvP Fest and the start of a Steam Chinese New Year Sale, offering a historic low discount
of 13% for the next two weeks.
This isn’t a minor patch; developers describe it as a complete metamorphosis
impacting core gameplay elements. The team has rebuilt the user interface, overhauled inventory logic and adjusted combat pacing, aiming for a more refined and strategically deep experience.
Visual Overhaul: Clarity and Information
The most immediately noticeable change is a comprehensive visual refresh. The developers focused on improving clarity and accessibility of information. Item descriptions have been redesigned to eliminate ambiguity, presenting key stats and effects at a glance. New graphical displays for character statistics provide intuitive feedback on the impact of build choices. Finally, the shop interface has been streamlined to improve efficiency during the fast-paced decision-making inherent in the auto-battler genre.
Inventory Expansion and the Shift to “Fusion”
Addressing player feedback, the development team has significantly expanded the inventory grid from 7×9 to 9×9, providing more space for complex build strategies. However, the more substantial change is a shift in the game’s meta towards Fusion
. The number of fusion items available has more than doubled, increasing from 33 to 62, while the number of directly purchasable items has been reduced.
This change fundamentally alters how players acquire high-tier moves. Previously, obtaining powerful abilities often relied on luck. Now, mastering fusion paths – understanding which items combine to create stronger ones – is the cornerstone of the divine ascent
. This emphasizes strategic planning and knowledge of item interactions over simple chance.
Combat Pacing: Faster Reactions, Precise Execution
The combat experience has been dramatically altered with a significant reduction in hit stun duration. Previously at 1.75 seconds, hit stun now lasts only 0.25 seconds. This change is intended to increase the speed and intensity of battles, demanding faster reaction times and more precise timing from players. The developers aim to create a more dynamic and engaging combat loop.
Balancing and Iteration: Over 100 Items Reworked
To ensure a balanced and engaging experience, the developers have reworked or adjusted over 100 items. This extensive rebalancing effort aims to eliminate underperforming items and ensure that a wider range of builds and playstyles are viable. The goal is to create a meta where strategic diversity is rewarded.
Future Development: Mod Support on the Horizon
Looking ahead, the development team plans to add mod support to Wretch: Divine Ascent. This feature, while not yet implemented, is anticipated to unlock significant creative potential for the community, allowing players to create and share their own custom content.
Wretch: Divine Ascent version 1.2.0 is available now on Steam. The current sale offers a 13% discount for a limited time.
