Wrexham secured a vital 1-0 victory over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, moving back into the Championship play-off places while pushing their hosts closer to relegation.

The only goal of the match came five minutes before halftime when Josh Windass capitalized on a lay-off from strike partner Sam Smith to fire a right-footed drive from the edge of the area past Oxford goalkeeper Jamie Cumming. The strike was Windass’s fifth goal in his last six appearances, underscoring his recent form for the Welsh side.

Wrexham’s win allowed them to leapfrog Hull City into sixth place in the EFL Championship table on goal difference, with Hull having been held to a 2-2 draw by Leicester City earlier in the day. With two games remaining in the regular season, Wrexham now face champions Coventry City away and then fifth-placed Middlesbrough at home in their final fixtures.

For Oxford United, the defeat marked their first home loss in six games and left them five points from safety with only three matches left to play. The result increased the likelihood of an immediate return to League One after just two seasons in the Championship, particularly if results elsewhere go against them on the final matchday.

Oxford had opportunities to respond, especially in the latter stages, but lacked the attacking quality to break down a well-organized Wrexham defense. The visitors defended resolutely in the second half, making effective use of throw-ins to manage the tempo and limit Oxford’s chances despite sustained pressure in the final ten minutes.

Wrexham goalkeeper made a key save shortly after the hour mark to deny Dominic Hyam the chance to double the lead from a corner, preserving the narrow advantage. Although Oxford earned a corner late on and pushed for an equalizer, they were unable to create a clear-cut chance to level the score.

The match carried added significance due to the historical connection between the clubs, with Oxford showing footage of their 1986 League Cup final victory over Queens Park Rangers on the big screen before kickoff — a match that occurred nearly 40 years to the day prior.

Wrexham’s victory keeps alive their hopes of securing a play-off spot and potentially achieving a historic fourth consecutive promotion. Their fate now depends on results in their final two games, while Oxford must rely on a combination of their own results and favorable outcomes elsewhere to avoid the drop to League One.
