Director Steven Soderbergh has confirmed that he will not revive a previously developed Star Wars spin-off project centered on the character Ben Solo. Despite a recent change in leadership at Lucasfilm, Soderbergh indicated that the project remains dead.

The project, referred to as The Hunt for Ben Solo, was an effort by actor Adam Driver to bring his character back to the franchise. Driver had tapped Soderbergh to develop the film, which was reportedly set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Project Development and Cancellation

According to reports, the development of the film involved writer Scott Z. Burns. The project aimed to explore the resurrection of Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, who was depicted as deceased in the final film of the sequel trilogy.

Soderbergh stated that he spent between two and a half to nearly three years of his life working on the project. However, the initiative was halted by Disney executives. The stated reason for the cancellation was that the studio did not believe Ben Solo could be alive.

The project eventually vanished, leading to its current status as a scrapped endeavor.

Leadership Changes at Lucasfilm

Earlier in 2026, it was announced that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was leaving the studio. Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan were appointed to take over leadership roles.

Leadership Changes at Lucasfilm

This transition sparked public speculation that Lucasfilm might revive various projects that had been previously canceled, including the Ben Solo film. When asked by The Playlist if he would revive the project under the new leadership, Soderbergh responded with a blunt Nope.

Look, if it was gonna happen, it would have happened … It’s that simple.

Narrative Context and Potential Pathways

While the film project is defunct, other Star Wars media has explored themes of Ben Solo’s return. In the comic series Legacy of Vader, writer and Lucasfilm creative consultant Charles Soule introduced a plot where Kylo Ren returns to Vader’s Castle on Mustafar.

In issue #10 of Legacy of Vader, the character travels to a new plane of existence and reunites with Luke Skywalker. This narrative development has led some observers to suggest that the comic provides a potential pathway for a character to return to the living, mirroring the conceptual goals of the canceled Soderbergh project.

Despite these narrative possibilities in other mediums, Soderbergh remains firm that the specific film project he worked on will not be revisited.
