The Writers Guild of America West has reached a tentative agreement with its staff union, ending a strike that lasted 81 days. The announcement was made on May 8, 2026, marking the conclusion of a labor dispute between the guild’s leadership and the employees who support its operations.
The Writers Guild Staff Union (WGSU) represents 116 employees working in specialized areas including residuals, communications, and legal services. This agreement represents the first contract for the unionized staff.
According to the terms of the pending contract, staff members will receive minimum pay increases of 12 percent over a three-year term. The agreement also establishes a new salary floor, raising the minimum annual pay from $43,000 to $57,000.
Beyond compensation, the deal includes several workplace protections. The WGSU stated that the contract secures seniority provisions regarding layoffs and outlines a stepped grievance process alongside provisions for progressive discipline.
The agreement also addresses emerging technological concerns, providing staff with better protections against AI
, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times.
The strike began on February 17, 2026, after the WGSU accused union management of failing to bargain in good faith. The dispute became particularly strained over the following weeks, with WGA West leadership alleging that employees engaged in intimidation and violence.
Specifically, guild leadership claimed that staffers appeared at the home of Ellen Stutzman, the executive director of the guild. Leadership described this action as absolutely unacceptable
.
By April 28, 2026, the two parties had reached an impasse. Leadership indicated at that time that their last offer, which had been presented on April 8, 2026, was final.
The timing of the strike created internal tension for the WGA, as the staff walkout occurred just before the guild was scheduled to enter negotiations with major film and television studios. Variety reported that the strike served as an unwanted distraction
during those critical industry discussions.
The WGSU noted that the final agreement includes a no-strike clause designed to protect concerted activity while ensuring operational stability.
Once ratified, the WGSU strike will end and Writers Guild staff will return to doing what we do best: defending the writers’ hard-fought gains and helping them build collective power
