Kilmar Abrego garcia, who was wrongly deported to El Salvador,is back in the United States to face charges of conspiring to transport illegal immigrants. Attorney General pam Bondi announced the indictment, filed in a Tennessee federal court, accuses Abrego Garcia of playing a significant role in an alien smuggling ring.
The indictment, filed in May, alleges that Abrego Garcia worked with at least five others to illegally transport immigrants into the U.S.and move them from the border to various destinations. Bondi stated that the grand jury found Abrego Garcia made over 100 trips, smuggling people, including MS-13 gang members, throughout the country.
Abrego Garcia’s attorney, Andrew Rossman, said it is indeed now up to the U.S. judicial system to ensure his client receives due process. Rossman added that the administration had the ability to bring him back sooner but refused.
Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, was initially deported from Maryland despite a 2019 immigration judge’s order granting him protection due to the likelihood of persecution by gangs in El Salvador. The deportation sparked controversy and criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
Bondi said that El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele agreed to return Abrego Garcia to the U.S. after American officials presented an arrest warrant. She added that if convicted, Abrego Garcia will be sentenced in the U.S. and then returned to El Salvador after completing his sentence.
The grand jury found that over the past nine years, Abrego Garcia has played a significant role in an alien smuggling ring… He made over 100 trips… smuggling people throughout our country… MS-13 members, violent gang terrorist organisation members… throughout our country.
What’s next
