The Women’s Tennis Association ​(WTA) has implemented ‍a new rule⁤ allowing⁢ players to protect their⁤ rankings while undergoing fertility‍ treatments. This policy provides a special entry ranking for players who step away from professional tennis for procedures ⁤such as egg or ⁣embryo freezing, enabling them ⁣to return to the tour without‍ a significant ranking penalty.

Under the new guidelines,⁤ players must be out of competition ⁣for at least 10 consecutive weeks​ to qualify. Upon their return,​ they receive⁣ a “Special Entry Ranking”⁣ based on their recent ‌performance averages. this protected ranking ‌can ‍be used for entry into up to three tournaments.

The fertility policy is an extension of ⁣the WTA’s⁣ existing support programs, which include maternity‍ leave, postpartum‍ support, and fertility grants. WTA CEO ‍Portia Archer stated the organization is committed to supporting ⁤players as they‌ balance their careers and family choices.
