The World Trade Organization released its updated global trade outlook on Oct. 8, 2026, raising its forecast for 2026 world trade volume growth to 3.9% from a previous March projection of 1.9%, according to renews.co.kr. The upward revision reflects stronger-than-expected adaptation to energy supply disruptions and powerful investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Global Trade Volume Growth Forecast for 2026
The upgraded 3.9% projection for 2026 marks a 2.0-point increase from earlier forecasts issued in March 2026. Trade officials anticipate further acceleration in 2027, with growth projected to reach 4.1%. During the first half of 2026, global trade expanded by 3.5% despite ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.
Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Drives Semiconductor Demand
Demand for artificial intelligence products, particularly semiconductors and servers, served as the primary engine for international commerce during the first half of the year. Trade in AI-related goods expanded by 67% compared to the same period in the previous year, accounting for 47% of total global trade growth during the first half of 2026.
Supply Chain Resilience Amid Middle East Energy Disruptions
Crude oil exports from the Middle East dropped by roughly 24% and liquefied natural gas exports fell by about 47% during the first half of 2026. However, increased production from alternative regions limited the net global export decline to approximately 6% for crude and 1% for LNG. Fertilizer markets similarly adjusted as alternative supplier nations expanded their market entry. Shippers also diverted cargo through alternative maritime routes, keeping worldwide container throughput up by 3.9% year-over-year through July 2026.
Regional Trade Expansion and Contracting Middle East Markets
Asia leads regional export growth for 2026 at 9.9%, followed by North America at 5.7% and Africa at 5.6%. Conversely, exports from the Middle East are projected to fall by 17.2%, while CIS exports are expected to contract by 3.9%. On the import side, Asia again ranks first at 9.5%, followed by Africa at 8.9%, the CIS at 8.8%, and Latin America at 4.6%, while Middle East imports face a 15.4% decline.
Commercial Services Trade Slowdown
Commercial services trade encountered headwinds as Middle East conflicts disrupted transport and travel sectors. WTO analysts lowered their 2026 commercial services export growth forecast to 3.3% from an earlier estimate of 4.8%, before anticipating a rebound to 6.4% in 2027.
