A new direct passenger air route linking Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei Province, and Jakarta, Indonesia, was launched on Sunday, April 12, 2026.

The inaugural flight departed from Wuhan to establish a direct connection between central China and Southeast Asia, according to reporting from Xinhua.

Expanding Connectivity in Central China

The launch of the Wuhan-Jakarta route follows other recent efforts to increase aviation connectivity between central Chinese provinces and Indonesia. In December 2025, the Hunan Airport Management Group announced the launch of a similar direct passenger service between Jakarta and Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province.

The Changsha-Jakarta service began operations on December 22, 2025, with a round-trip schedule operating once per week. The flight duration for a single trip between Changsha and Jakarta is approximately five-and-a-half hours.

Beyond the capital city of Jakarta, Hunan airport authorities also planned the introduction of a direct route to the resort island of Bali to coincide with the 2026 Spring Festival travel rush.

Economic and Trade Implications

The expansion of air routes from central China to Indonesia is intended to support existing economic, trade, and cultural ties. Indonesia is identified as the largest economy within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Officials expect these new aviation links to facilitate cross-border collaboration for enterprises based in Hunan and provide more efficient travel options for tourists visiting Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
