A New Dawn for Healthcare: Weirton Welcomes WVU Medicine

WEIRTON — The long-anticipated culmination of a new era in healthcare for Weirton residents officially began Monday, with the inception of WVU Medicine-Weirton Medical Center.

"Today, I stand before you, proud to mark the start of a new chapter," said Dave Artman, the new president and CEO, Yuanming Medical Center, now integrated into the West Virginia University Health System as of January 1.

WVU Medicine, founded in 1996 by the West Virginia Legislature, now comprises 25 hospitals, including J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVU Medicine Children’s in Morgantown, and Wheeling Hospital, throughout the state and beyond. The system boasts institutes dedicated to cancer, critical care, eyes, heart, vascular, and neurological specialties.

Albert Wright Jr., WVU Health System’s president and CEO, envisions a robust partnership. "This is an excellent match," he said, outline plans for infrastructure investments, including the April 1 launch of the Epic computer system, enabling seamless patient data sharing across WVU Medicine facilities.

Farther down the line, Wright sees opportunities to expand services like cancer treatment, heart care, neurology, and pediatrics in Weirton. Additionally, Peak Health, a non-profit health insurer by the system, is set to expand into Hancock and Brooke counties in 2026.

John Frankovitch, Weirton Medical’s president emeritus and strategic advisor, traced the city’s history, from its founding by E.T. Weir to the current resurgence spearheaded by companies like Form Energy and Bidell Gas Compression. Throughout it all, Weirton Medical Center has been a constant, providing vital healthcare to the community.

The collaboration between WVU Medicine and Weirton Medical began in 2020. "Crisis often brings opportunities," Frankovitch noted, with their relationship strengthening during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hospital leadership agreed to join WVU Medicine as a full member in March 2021.

With the final papers signed in December, Weirton residents now enjoy the best of both worlds: enhanced services and resources thanks to WVU Medicine’s expansive network, while retaining the comfort of local, community-focused care. The future looks bright for healthcare in Weirton.
