West Virginia Rifle team extends win streak with dominant victory over Akron

Akron, Ohio – In a display of dominance, the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team notched their third consecutive win this weekend, defeating the No. 11 Akron Zips. The 25-match regular season winning streak continued, with the Mountaineers proving too strong by clinching a 36-point victory at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.

West Virginia’s aggregate total of 4,747 was bolstered by impressive marks of 2,359 in smallbore and 2,388 in air rifle. Akron trails behind with an aggregate total of 4,711 (2,345 SB – 2,366 AR).

The Mountaineers’ dominance was evident in the individual rankings, with the top eight spots filled by WVU athletes. Seniors Gavin Barnick and Natalie Perrin, sophomores Lauri Syrja and Griffin Lake, and freshman Ashlyn Blake served as counters for the match.

Barnick and Syrja topped the leaderboard, both posting scores of 1,189. Barnick led in smallbore with a 593 and finished fifth in air rifle with a 596. Meanwhile, Syrja shone in smallbore, smashing a season-high 592, and tied for second in air rifle with a 597.

Blake, the third WVU athlete on the podium, totaled 1,185 – the top air rifle score of 598 and a tie for fifth in smallbore with a 587.

Freshmen Jennifer Kocher and Jacob Wisman tied for fourth place, each scoring 1,183. Kocher demonstrated her prowess with a 588 in smallbore and 595 in air rifle, while Wisman shone in air rifle with a 596.

Perrin’s 1,181 total included a season-high smallbore score of 587 and a 594 in air rifle. Camryn Camp and Lake tied for seventh with identical 1,180 totals, each hitting 583 in smallbore and 597 in air rifle.

Sophomore Maximus Duncan also participated, posting an 1,173 with a career-high smallbore score of 585.

The Mountaineers will look to maintain their momentum as they head into their final regular season match against Kentucky on Feb. 8.
