The wrestling world has been awash with tributes following the reported passing of WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan. However, not everyone within WWE seems to be in agreement with the company’s extensive mourning practices. During Tuesday’s episode of ”WWE NXT,” which featured WWE’s third 10-bell salute and memorial video package for Hogan, a WWE trainee named Jamar Hampton (formerly known as Troy yearwood) took to social media to voice his dissent. Hampton’s criticism of the “romanticized, posthumous image” of Hogan has ignited a firestorm of debate among fans.
A Controversial Quote Surfaces
Hampton used his Instagram account to share a quote from Hogan’s infamous 2007 racist tirade. In the unearthed statement, hogan expressed shame over his daughter Brooke Hogan’s relationship with a Black man, confessing, “I am racist to a point,” and using a racial slur. Hampton directly challenged his followers, asking, “Is this really who we should be celebrating?” He urged netizens to “do their research” and provided a link to the full audio recording of Hogan’s rant in his caption.
Mixed Fan Reactions Emerge
The response to Hampton’s post has been decidedly mixed. Many fans have applauded his courage and outspokenness, with a notable number agreeing that WWE’s tributes to Hogan have felt excessive. Some instagram users have expressed newfound respect for Hampton, citing his willingness to speak out.
However, hampton’s critique has also drawn criticism. One commenter urged Hampton to embrace forgiveness, while another suggested that WWE had failed to capitalize on other Black competitors like Mark Henry, advising Hampton to “find a second job.” As of this report,Hampton has not removed his post or offered further comments, and WWE has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
Who is Jamar Hampton?
Jamar Hampton, a University of North Carolina alumnus, is one of WWE’s newer recruits. He gained recognition for his work in autonomous wrestling promotions, notably EVOLVE, where his last match saw him lose to Edris Enofe. He also competed in WWE LFG. His bold stance on a highly sensitive issue has certainly put him on the radar, sparking a conversation about legacy, accountability, and the complexities of celebrating public figures.
