On a Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Brian Wyndham addressed members of the Brazil community at the Clay County YMCA, delivering his annual State of the City address.

Wyndham’s speech reflected on the accomplishments of 2024 and set the stage for the upcoming year, highlighting both the significant strides already achieved and the ambitious goals for 2025.

Reflections and Optimism

“I’ve got a really good feeling about what we’ve done, where we’re at and where we’re headed,” Wyndham said in his opening remarks. “We have some pretty big projects lined up that I’m excited to talk about as well.”

His optimism was palpable as he looked towards a future brimming with potential and actionable plans, emphasizing community feedback and participation in achieving these goals.

New Public Transportation and Community Services

One of the most talked-about initiatives was the recently introduced public transportation bus provided by Thrive West Central. The new service, which operates daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., is a significant step in enhancing community accessibility and convenience for residents of Brazil, Indiana from Monday through Friday.

Wyndham’s question, “Has anyone been seeing this bus running around Brazil?” received laughter from the audience. This welcomed the engaged response from the record, “We can’t thank Thrive West Central enough for this service. They’ve been such an important part of our community and now to have public transportation in Brazil is a godsend. We certainly appreciate them for all of the great work they’ve done to make our community a better place.”

All over the country, urban and rural areas alike are seeing the positive impacts of robust public transportation systems. These systems can reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve access to essential services.

Community Crossings Grant and Infrastructural Updates

City Hall’s exterior decorative lighting continues to enhance downtown Brazil’s aesthetics, showcasing recent updates funded, in part, by a $500,000 Community Crossings grant. As Mayor Wyndham noted, “We believe that we have a solution for those bulbs. The ones we’re looking at have a shelf life of seven years so we’re looking forward to getting those in and installed as soon as possible.”

Investing in Public Infrastructure

Wyndham stressed the importance of improving the city’s stormwater and wastewater infrastructure, pointing to the construction of a new 4,000-square-foot garage at the wastewater plant. This garage significantly increases the efficiency and sustainability of the city’s operations, by enabling the storage of equipment indoors. A major component of the city’s infrastructure plan includes a substantial overhaul of the existing water line.

Originally nearing unsustainable levels oil proved to be beneficial for future development as “We did receive a $100,000 grant for that and fortunately did find out there was very little lead in our water systems,” Mayor Wyndham said.

One of the city’s critical initiatives entails replacing roughly 4.5 miles of water lines. This major project will cost approximately 12.5 million dollars. The city has secured a $3 million forgivable loan, which will greatly alleviate the financial burden. The upgrade ensures that Brazil’s residents will have sufficient and safe water supply for generations. This initiative is akin to the Flint, Michigan water crisis, emphasizes the importance of proactive maintenance and modernization in urban water infrastructure. By prioritizing these investments, cities can avoid the devastating health and economic impacts of compromised water quality.

Sustainable Solutions and Renewable Energy

“We’re looking at putting a solar field at the wastewater treatment plant — the plant itself uses around 70% of the energy used by the city,”

“That’s what you like to see in a city like ours — always making improvements and progressing forward.” Wyndham said in his speech reflecting on the various improvements for Brazil, and a key aspect to this modern approach is a commitment to sustainable practices in the city’s infrastructure.

Keeping the Community Informed

“If there’s an issue, please don’t hesitate to call and let us know,” he said. “There are things that might happen that we may not be aware of, so in order for us to be able to serve the community to the best of our ability we invite you to call us if you see an issue that you believe needs our attention.”

Mayor Wyndham’s emphasis on community involvement underscores the importance of open communication channels in fostering a resilient and informed citizenry. By encouraging residents to voice their concerns, the city can address issues swiftly and effectively, ensuring that every voice in the community is heard and valued.

Public Safety and Emergency Response

Wyndham reported that the Brazil Police Department has been exceptionally active, responding to over 70,000 calls last year and successfully implemented body cameras to further enhance transparency and accountability in police operations. The fire department spent much of its time towards educating the next generation and community members on fire prevention and safety.

The Fire department will now offer free walkthroughs of any business in case of an event as Mayor Wyndham said, The department would then have a detailed plan and layout of the building.
