Ancelotti’s Future at real madrid Faces Uncertainty
Updated May 25, 2025
Carlo Ancelotti‘s position as manager of Real Madrid is reportedly under scrutiny despite his past successes. His return in 2021, following Zinedine Zidane’s departure, initially stabilized a club undergoing stadium redevelopment and facing a thin squad.
During his first season back, Ancelotti led the team to a La Liga and Champions League double, along with the Spanish Supercup. This achievement came despite the departures of key players like Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. Financial constraints, stemming from escalating stadium costs, prevented significant squad improvements. However, Ancelotti’s man-management and tactical decisions, combined with individual player brilliance, propelled Madrid to victory.
The seeds of discord where sown as the squad wasn’t dramatically improved, and replacements for departing players, notably Toni Kroos, were deemed inadequate. The arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Paris St-Germain heightened expectations, but fractures had already emerged within the team, both tactically and in the locker room.
Disagreements arose concerning physical planning and discipline. Club President Florentino Perez, known for his deep involvement, reportedly became increasingly vocal about his frustrations. From the directors’ box, critical comments surfaced regarding the perceived lack of defensive work by key players, despite meetings aimed at addressing thes issues. Doubts were also cast on Ancelotti’s handling of emerging talents like Arda Guler and Endrick.
By October, the club leadership reportedly felt Ancelotti wasn’t adequately addressing these issues, leading to consideration of a new direction for Real Madrid.
What’s next
The Real Madrid board will likely assess Ancelotti’s performance in upcoming matches and evaluate potential managerial replacements during the off-season.
