The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially debunked widespread reports claiming that footballing giants Pep guardiola and Xavi Hernandez had applied for the vacant head coach position of the Indian senior men’s national team. The federation confirmed that emails purporting to be from the renowned Spanish managers were, actually, fraudulent.
AIFF Statement Clarifies Hoax Applications
In a statement released on Saturday, the AIFF addressed the circulating claims, which had gained important traction in both indian and Spanish media earlier in the week. reports had suggested that India’s technical director, Subrata Paul, had acknowledged Xavi’s interest in the role. However, the AIFF’s official communication firmly refuted these assertions, stating, “AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has as emerged that the email applications were not genuine.”
This clarification comes after the AIFF publicly advertised the vacancy following the resignation of Catalan coach Manolo marquez in May. Marquez stepped down from his position to dedicate his focus to his club commitments with FC Goa.
A High Volume of Interest, But Not From the Elite
The AIFF revealed that the public advertisement for the head coach role attracted a substantial number of applicants, with a total of 170 expressions of interest received. While this indicates a broad appeal for the position, the federation’s statement makes it clear that the highly publicized applications from Guardiola and Hernandez were not part of this legitimate pool.Xavi Hernandez has been without a managerial role as his departure from Barcelona in May 2024. Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, remains under contract with manchester City until June 2027, making his submission for the Indian national team role highly improbable.
