Helen Chiang left Microsoft on October 23, 2026, ending a 21-year tenure at the company just three months after her promotion to the role of Xbox chief operating officer, according to an internal memo. The departure of the division’s chief operating officer contrasts with the operational integration that Xbox leadership announced in July 2026 to coordinate content, hardware, platform, and services under a single model. Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, communicated the departure to the employees, stating in the internal message: Helen Chiang deja Microsoft hoy. Le agradezco sus años de servicio y le deseo lo mejor

Twenty-one Years at Microsoft Cut Short by an Abrupt Exit
Chiang began her career at the company in 2005 as a product manager for Streets & Trips, moved to the Xbox division in 2007, and later took charge of Mojang in 2014 to direct the Minecraft franchise. Her trajectory also included Xbox Live, and in March 2024 an official Microsoft publication already identified her as chief operating officer of Game Content and Studios.
A Restructuring Division Facing Leadership Shuffling
The departure coincides with a broader operational reorganization inside Microsoft’s gaming division. Furthermore, Microsoft transferred the management of franchises such as Age of Empires and Halo to the corporate structure of Activision. Despite rumors and the restructuring, Sharma stated in an interview with The New York Times that the video game division is not for sale, explaining that the company is redefining its operating model and seeking partnerships to ensure viability, while circulating versions point to additional upcoming rounds of layoffs without a confirmed calendar or figures.

Temporary Distribution of Responsibilities Across Executive Ranks
With Chiang’s departure, her direct responsibilities have been handed over temporarily to other Xbox executives, as noted in the internal communication, with Sharma indicating that further details regarding the direction of operations will be provided once future plans are finalized. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed whether the chief operating officer position will remain active, whether a permanent successor will be appointed, or how the company will permanently distribute those operational duties. Kari Perez, responsible for communications at Xbox, declined to comment on individual personnel matters, leaving open questions about the permanent leadership structure of the division.
