The failure affected a shared internal service used across multiple Microsoft products. Van Vliet stated on X that this specific service handles entitlement checks, which are necessary for the system to verify game ownership and populate a user’s full library.

Cause and Impact of the Xbox Service Failure

The outage did not impact all titles equally because several publishing and store partners rely on the same failing infrastructure. This dependency resulted in some users experiencing issues in specific games while others remained unaffected, Van Vliet explained.

This caused some sign-in scenarios to fail, and it caused many scenarios that require an entitlement check to also fail, such as listing out your Full Library and launching games that you own. It also affected several of our publishing and store partners who depend on those same systems which is why some of you saw issues in specific games and not others.

Microsoft’s on-call teams identified the problem overnight via automated monitoring and declared a major incident. To restore service, teams shifted traffic to healthy system segments while investigating the root cause. Because this recovery happened unevenly across different regions, some users regained access hours before others.

Microsoft’s Recovery Plan and Infrastructure Changes

Van Vliet described the outage as an unacceptable situation and committed to a full post-incident review. The company intends to focus on why a single service failure was able to impact such a broad range of functions and why the recovery process took as long as it did.

To prevent a recurrence, Xbox plans to implement the following technical changes:

  • Hardening the dependencies that underpin game launching and sign-in processes.
  • Improving the detection and containment of this specific class of system failure.
  • Increasing the speed and clarity of communication with users during outages.

Van Vliet stated that the goal is to ensure a single point of failure cannot disrupt user experiences in the future.

Industry Context and Upcoming Halo Launch

This disruption follows a separate, prolonged system outage experienced by PlayStation. The timing of the Xbox failure coincides with the lead-up to the wide launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original Xbox title built on Unreal Engine 5.

The remake serves as part of a 25th-anniversary celebration for the original Xbox platform. In a review of the title, IGN assigned Halo: Campaign Evolved a score of 7 out of 10.
