Microsoft has begun the rollout of Xbox mode for Windows 11, introducing a console-inspired interface designed to streamline the gaming experience across laptops, desktops, and tablets. The feature aims to minimize background distractions by providing a dedicated environment where a user’s game library and recently played titles are more accessible.
According to the Windows Experience Blog, the deployment is starting in select markets. The interface is specifically engineered for moments when users want their games to take center stage
on Windows 11 devices and handhelds.
Handheld Enhancements and Auto SR Preview
Alongside the general Windows 11 update, Microsoft and ASUS have released a series of updates for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds. These devices, which launched six months ago in 45 countries, are designed to combine Xbox ecosystem integration with the flexibility of Windows 11 in a portable form factor.

A primary highlight of the update is the introduction of an Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) preview. Auto SR is an AI-powered upscaling technology previously available on select Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, intended to improve frame rates and visual sharpness in PC games.
The Auto SR preview is currently available specifically for the ROG Xbox Ally X for docked play. This implementation targets the specific challenges of balancing image quality and frames per second (FPS) when the handheld is connected to an external display.
Access to the Auto SR feature is currently limited to Xbox Insiders, allowing Microsoft to test and refine the technology before a wider release. The ROG Xbox Ally X utilizes its onboard Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to handle the graphics upscaling required for the feature.
Additional ROG Xbox Ally Updates
Beyond the AI upscaling preview, the latest updates for the ROG Xbox Ally family include several quality-of-life improvements and technical refinements:
- Docking improvements to stabilize the transition from handheld to external monitor play.
- The introduction of a Collective Library for better game organization.
- Enhanced vibration feedback for improved tactile immersion.
- Optimizations for hundreds of popular games to ensure better compatibility with handheld controls.
These updates follow a commitment from Microsoft and ASUS to iterate on the hardware based on player feedback since the devices’ initial launch.
The integration of Xbox mode into Windows 11 represents a broader effort to blur the line between PC and console gaming, providing a more cohesive user interface that removes the traditional desktop friction often associated with launching and managing games on a Windows machine.
