Xbox News: STALKER 2 on PlayStation & Subnautica Delay
Subnautica 2 Delayed to 2026 Following Studio Leadership Changes, “MAJJAM” Announced
The highly anticipated sequel to the underwater exploration hit, Subnautica, has seen its Early Access launch pushed back to 2026. This delay follows the unexpected departure of the game’s co-creators – Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland, adn Max McGuire - from Unknown Worlds, the studio they co-founded.
Subnautica 2: A Shift in Leadership and a Focus on Quality
The exit of Gill, Cleveland, and McGuire marks a significant turning point for the Subnautica franchise. Steve Papoutsis, a veteran from Striking distance Studios, has stepped in as the new CEO of Unknown Worlds. While the leadership change is considerable, krafton, the South korea-based parent company, assures fans that the delay was already under consideration before these shifts occured.
According to a statement released Wednesday and detailed on the Unknown Worlds website, the decision to postpone the Early Access launch until 2026 stems from valuable feedback received during playtests. Krafton emphasized that player input reinforced their confidence in the game’s overall direction, but also highlighted areas needing further refinement.
“During playtests for ‘Subnautica 2,’ we received valuable feedback from our community that reinforced our confidence in the game’s direction,” Krafton explained to Variety. “at the same time, the feedback highlighted a few areas that could benefit from further refinement before release. As community voices play a central role in how we shape our games, we’ve made the decision to give the development team more time to implement that feedback and deliver a more complete experience. As a result, ‘Subnautica 2’s Early Access launch has been rescheduled for 2026. This decision was based solely on our commitment to quality and to delivering the best possible experience for players. It was not influenced by any contractual or financial considerations.”
Essentially, the team wants to ensure Subnautica 2 lives up to the incredibly high expectations set by its predecessor. They’re prioritizing a polished and immersive experience, and are willing to take the extra time needed to achieve that. For those of us eagerly awaiting a return to the depths, it’s a little disappointing, but ultimately a reassuring sign that the developers are dedicated to delivering something truly special.
