Price Hikes Reflect Macroeconomic Challenges
Microsoft announced on Friday that it is raising prices on its Xbox game consoles in the USA for the second time this year, citing “changes in the macroeconomic environment.” The company’s video game division is grappling with rising costs due to tariffs, strong competition, and a cautious consumer base.
The price adjustments, set to take effect on October 3, impact the current generation of Xbox consoles. The Xbox Series S will cost approximately $450, while the more powerful Xbox Series X will be priced around $650. The special edition Galaxy Black Series X, featuring two terabytes of memory, will approach $800.
Second Increase this Year
Xbox previously increased console prices in the USA, Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom in May. These increases, combined with the latest adjustments, mean the Xbox Series X has seen a $150 price increase in six months.
According to Joost van Dreunen,a game professor at the NYU Stern School of Business, the price increase is a direct response to rising supply chain costs and new trade pressures, rather than an attempt to capitalize on market demand or software growth expenses.
industry-Wide Trend
Xbox is not alone in raising prices. Sony increased the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by approximately $50 last month, with the PS5 Pro model currently offered for $749.99.
Microsoft stated that prices for controllers, headsets, and consoles in other markets will remain unchanged.
Impact on the Gaming Industry
Despite consoles being a key growth driver for the video game industry-fueled by anticipated releases like “Grand Theft Auto VI” and potential new hardware such as Nintendo’s Switch 2-delays in game releases and price increases are creating uncertainty for the industry’s short-term outlook.
The rising costs may lead gamers to reassess their budgets for game consoles amid increasing inflation.
