Xi Jinping‘s Visit to Europe: Key Takeaways

Chinese leader Xi Jinping visited Europe from May 5 to May 10, 2024. He visited France, Serbia, and Hungary. The trip aimed to divide European countries and counteract the EU’s recent shift towards reducing reliance on China.

Europe’s stance on China has changed in recent years. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, European countries have adopted a tougher approach towards China. Many nations that once supported closer ties now lean towards caution and scrutiny.

France

In France, President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Xi with grand ceremony but maintained a firm stance on critical issues like the war in Ukraine and China’s market practices. Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged Xi to reconsider his support for Russia. Despite efforts to show unity, Germany’s conciliatory tone towards China indicated possible divisions in Europe.

Serbia

Xi’s trip continued in Serbia, where he and President Aleksandar Vučić strengthened their strategic partnership. They commemorated the NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, criticizing U.S. hegemony. Xi and Vučić signed a free trade agreement and committed to further cooperation and infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Hungary

In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán praised Xi and echoed his thoughts on a multipolar world. Hungary has become China’s main supporter within the EU. The two leaders announced plans for an “all-weather” partnership. With Hungary set to take the EU presidency in July, Orbán pledged to advocate for China’s interests within the Council.

Future Implications

Xi’s visit aligns with upcoming European Parliament elections. Orbán and other nationalists hope to gain influence, which could reshape EU policies toward China.

While it remains uncertain if Xi achieved his objectives, he presented himself as a significant world leader and highlighted divisions within Europe. The results of the upcoming elections will be critical in assessing the impact of his visit on China-Europe relations.
