Xiaomi has launched the Xiaomi 17 Ultra globally, positioning the device as a high-end competitor in the camera-centric smartphone market. The device features a partnership with Leica, the German camera manufacturer, to implement software-level changes and sensibilities regarding how scenes are captured.

The smartphone is equipped with a versatile set of sensors housed in a large camera bump. To enhance the photography experience, the device offers various focal lengths on the hardware side and a range of preset filters and settings to modify the final image.

Core Hardware Specifications

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor. The device features a 6.9-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1200 x 2608 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate.

The display reaches a peak brightness of 3,500 nits, which is intended to assist with visibility in bright lighting conditions and improve video playback.

The phone utilizes Silicon/Carbon-Ion technology for its battery, which has a capacity of 6,000 mAh. This battery configuration is designed to support several days of light to medium usage and provide extended standby time.

The Photography Kit Pro

To provide a more traditional camera experience, Xiaomi has released the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Photography Kit Pro. This accessory transforms the phone’s grip and provides professional-grade physical controls, including a two-stage shutter that allows users to half-press to lock focus and full-press to capture an image.

The Photography Kit Pro

The Kit Pro includes several specialized hardware components:

  • A customizable dial used to adjust ISO, shutter speed, white balance, filters, and EV, or to browse the photo gallery.
  • A zoom lever that allows for quick switching of focal lengths via a flick or continuous zoom when held.
  • A dedicated video button for instant recording, which can also be customized to adjust aspect ratio or exposure verification.
  • An integrated thumb support designed for a stable grip.

The Kit Pro also includes a 2,000mAh battery connected via Type-C. This accessory functions as a power bank and supports 90W wired HyperCharge. By default, the grip begins charging the phone when the device battery drops below 20%.

For creative flexibility, the kit features a filter adapter ring compatible with the phone’s Camera Ring. This allows the use of 67mm camera filters, such as Black Mist or ND filters, although these filters must be purchased separately.

Pairing the phone with the Photography Kit Pro also unlocks Fastshot mode, which is a streamlined street photography interface designed for capturing fleeting moments instantly.

Additional Accessories and Market Position

In addition to the Pro kit, Xiaomi offers a standard Photography Kit. This version includes a 270mAh battery and is rated IP54 for dust and splash resistance.

Xiaomi also provides external add-ons that snap onto the camera like a cover, as well as a USB-based accessory featuring hardware buttons to facilitate one-hand operation during photo and video capture.

While high-end camera phones in the United States are typically dominated by the Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and iPhone series, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra targets a wider range of choices available to consumers in Asia and parts of Europe.
