Xiaomi Launches Affordable Smart Lock with Matter Support

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Xiaomi has entered the smart lock market with a new retrofit model, the Self-Install Smart Lock, designed to appeal to renters and homeowners seeking an easy upgrade to home security. Unveiled initially in Japan and the UAE, the lock distinguishes itself through a no-drill installation process and, crucially, support for the Matter smart home connectivity standard, including Apple Home. The launch, noted on , comes as Matter gains traction as a unifying protocol for smart home devices.

Unlike traditional smart locks that often require professional installation and potential door modifications, Xiaomi’s approach allows users to add smart functionality to existing doors without altering the door’s structure. This “retrofit” design is not new – companies like August, Yale and Nuki have offered similar solutions for years – but it represents Xiaomi’s first foray into this segment, particularly with Matter integration. The lock is designed to fit over existing mechanical lock structures, supporting a range of cylinder types including Euro profile, UK mortise, and ASSA 2000.

The Self-Install Smart Lock offers multiple unlocking methods, catering to different user preferences and security needs. These include fingerprint recognition, utilizing a semiconductor sensor on a separate keypad with a reported 99.3% identification rate, as well as permanent and temporary passwords – including one-time and periodic codes. Bluetooth connectivity enables unlocking via smartphone (and Apple Home integration), while Wi-Fi allows for remote control through the Xiaomi Home app. Traditional key access is also retained, providing a fallback option.

Security is a core focus of the device, according to Xiaomi. The lock is equipped with the MJA1 chipset and has received cybersecurity certification from an EU authority, offering end-to-end software and hardware protection. The system provides alerts for various security events, including multiple failed unlock attempts, doors left open (requiring an optional door sensor), and potential duress situations. Auto-locking functionality is also included, further enhancing security.

The Matter integration is a significant aspect of this launch. Matter aims to simplify the smart home experience by providing a universal language for devices from different manufacturers to communicate. So the Xiaomi lock can seamlessly integrate with other Matter-compatible devices, regardless of the underlying ecosystem – Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. While voice control is supported through Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Home, some platforms require additional authentication steps, such as PIN code input for Alexa/Google Assistant and phone unlock/voice recognition for Apple Siri.

The Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock provides real-time monitoring capabilities through the Xiaomi Home app. Users can check the lock’s status, view access logs, and receive notifications for family member unlocks and door sensor events. The app allows for remote control and management of the lock, offering convenience and peace of mind.

The device is powered by a 2450mAh lithium battery, offering approximately six months of use under normal conditions. The optional keypad is IP65-rated, suggesting resistance to dust and water. Installation is designed to be straightforward, accommodating keys up to 5mm thick and specific cylinder projection heights.

Currently, the Xiaomi Self-Install Smart Lock is available in Japan for ¥12,980 (approximately $82 USD) and the UAE for AED 359 (approximately $98 USD). Support pages exist for the UK and multiple EU regions, indicating potential expansion into European markets, though specific pricing and release dates remain unannounced. The product was initially listed on Xiaomi’s global website in .

The timing of this launch is noteworthy. While retrofit smart locks have been available for some time, the inclusion of Matter support positions Xiaomi’s offering as a potentially compelling option, particularly for budget-conscious consumers. The lock’s ease of installation and multi-platform compatibility address key pain points for users looking to upgrade their home security without significant investment or technical expertise.
