A new compilation, Gift (The 4AD Years), released May 9, aims to cement Xmal Deutschland’s place in post-punk history. The German band, sometiems seen as a Siouxsie and the Banshees offshoot, gets a fresh look with this collection of remastered tracks from their time on the 4AD label.
Emerging from Germany’s Neue Deutsche Welle scene in 1980, Xmal Deutschland, initially an all-female group, gained traction with their single “Incubus Succubus.” After opening for Cocteau Twins, they signed with 4AD,releasing the albums fetish (1983) and Tocsin (1984). Both LPs resonated with British self-reliant music fans, with Tocsin even briefly entering the U.K.’s mainstream chart despite the German lyrics.
fetish emphasizes atmosphere, echoing Bauhaus, another band on the 4AD label. Produced by Ivo Watts-Russell, the album features ominous, danceable post-punk. Anja Huwe’s vocals, reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux, drive tracks like “Qual” and “Young Man.” However, the band’s sound, including Manuela Zwingmann’s martial drumming and Maneula Rickers’ experimental guitar work, also draws from krautrock and industrial music.
Tocsin, produced by Mick Glossop, offers a more accessible sound. With Peter Bellendir replacing Zwingmann on drums, the album balances goth elements with the sonic textures of Cocteau Twins. The songs, including “Mondlicht” and “Reigen,” lean toward darkwave and gothic pop, showcasing Huwe’s richer, more melodic vocals.
Gift includes remastered versions of both albums, along with “Incubus Succubus II” and tracks from the which EP. Despite Watts-Russell’s reservations about the band’s evolving sound, Gift underscores Xmal Deutschland’s unique contribution to the 4AD catalog, making it essential listening for fans of the label.
