ÖBB has completed its annual spring cleaning campaign across Austria, with crews removing winter dirt, graffiti, and debris from approximately 1,000 stations nationwide. The effort, carried out by nearly 500 cleaning specialists, included the thorough maintenance of facades, windows, floors, toilets, lifts, waste bins, and information boards, following the company’s principle of thorough, reliable, and environmentally friendly service.

In Tirol, the spring cleaning restored station areas to a clean state after winter accumulation of dirt, gravel, and dust, with special attention given to graffiti removal on stations and noise barriers. The timing of the campaign also allowed for the cleaning of station clocks and numerous information boards, ensuring both functionality and visual clarity for passengers.

In Vorarlberg, ÖBB employees cleaned floor surfaces across an area equivalent to 20 football fields as part of the XXL-Frühjahrsputz initiative, demonstrating the scale of the undertaking in western Austria. Similarly, in Salzburg, cleaning teams treated station grounds spanning 38 football fields, reflecting regional variations in the scope of work based on station size and infrastructure.

Across Austria, a total of 555 cleaning personnel participated in the spring cleaning operation, described by some outlets as a “Herkulesarbeit” — a Hercules-like task — due to the extensive surfaces involved and the detailed nature of the work, which included not only surface cleaning but also the maintenance of accessibility features and customer-facing amenities.

The cleaning services are part of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG’s ongoing commitment to station upkeep, with employees of ÖBB-Operative Services responsible for safety and cleanliness 24/7 at stations throughout the country. Their work contributes directly to customer well-being and satisfaction, particularly through the daily maintenance of toilets, lifts, waste bins, and other essential facilities.

As of Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the spring cleaning has been completed on schedule, with all targeted stations restored to a clean and well-maintained condition ahead of the warmer months, supporting ÖBB’s goal of providing a pleasant and hygienic environment for rail travelers across Austria.
