New Delhi: Authorities have issued advisories for residents in low-lying areas and cautioned against venturing near riverbanks as water levels in the Yamuna and Ganga rivers continue to rise, raising concerns of potential flooding. While current levels remain below the danger mark, officials are closely monitoring the situation, especially in the wake of continuous rainfall and water release from the Hathnikund barrage.
Yamuna Levels Rise in Delhi, Evacuation Warnings Issued
In Delhi, the administration has alerted citizens, especially those residing in flood-prone zones. The Yamuna’s water level, though currently below the critical threshold, is being watched with vigilance by the irrigation and flood control department.A report by NDTV highlighted that the Yamuna reached a record high of 208.66 meters in July 2023, which led to meaningful flooding in areas such as Yamuna Bazaar, Rajghat, and Civil Lines.
Officials attribute the current surge to a combination of factors, including water released from the Hathnikund barrage and persistent rainfall. There is a possibility that the river could breach the warning mark within the next 24 to 48 hours, prompting the issuance of advisories urging people to stay away from the riverbanks and to be prepared for potential evacuations in low-lying vicinities.
Uttar Pradesh on High alert as Ganga and Yamuna Inundate Residential Areas
Uttar Pradesh is experiencing a more severe flood-like situation, with the ganga and Yamuna rivers breaching their banks and entering residential areas in Prayagraj. Rescue operations are underway, with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams actively relocating residents from affected low-lying regions.
In Varanasi, the Ganga’s water level has risen dramatically following heavy rainfall, with visuals from Tulsi Ghat showing the swollen river nearing the ghat steps.
Prayagraj Grapples with Floodwaters, Thousands Displaced
the situation in Prayagraj is particularly dire. SDRF teams have deployed boats and are responding to distress calls, rescuing individuals stranded by the rising waters. As of Saturday, the Yamuna’s water level in Naini had reached 85.06 meters, while the Ganga in Phaphamau stood at 84.96 meters. Over 15,000 houses in the low-lying areas of Prayagraj have reportedly been inundated by floodwaters, underscoring the urgency of the rescue and relief efforts.
