Actor Yang 치승 revealed on an episode of MBC’s Radio Star
broadcast on October 7 that his total financial losses stemming from a fitness center lease closure and related disputes reached nearly 2 billion won, sportschosun.com reported.
Yang detailed the extensive financial fallout during the You Shouldn’t Just Sit There~
episode, which also featured appearances by Choi Kang-hee, Oh Man-seok, and Kim Won-hyo. The program achieved a 3.3% household viewership rating in both national and metropolitan markets, securing first place in its time slot according to Nielsen Korea data.
Assessing the Financial Impact and 2 Billion Won Loss
Yang explained that the financial damage accumulated from multiple operational failures and legal hurdles following the closure of his fitness center. He pointed to unreturned deposits, facility investment costs, member refund liabilities, legal fees, and approximately three years of lost operational revenue as the primary drivers of the loss.
The fitness center had been located in a building affected by a contribution-to-the-state (donation) dispute. Yang stated that he was never properly informed about these building administration issues during the initial contracting phase.
Despite losing his primary business foundation, Yang clarified his current financial standing to address public misconceptions. I am not a credit delinquent. I have a house,
he said, noting that while his assets have taken a massive hit, he did not lose every single possession.
Yang Cuts Costs and Receives Support from Peers
To cut down on daily living expenses during the financial downturn, Yang rode a motorcycle instead of driving a car to save on fuel costs. He described experiencing intense psychological stress, recounting how he would scream and cry inside his helmet for an hour at a time while riding to release emotional pressure.
Colleagues and industry peers stepped in to offer assistance during the difficult period. Yang mentioned that Choi Kang-hee offered prayers for him, Kim Sook helped locate potential new gym spaces, and Sung Hoon regularly provided meals. Reflecting on their support, Yang noted that the kindness of his peers prevented him from giving up entirely.
The publicity surrounding his financial troubles also triggered unexpected reactions from the public. While local restaurant owners offered extra food and landlords proposed rent-free spaces to help him restart operations, Yang noted that others approached him asking for direct cash loans ranging from 3 million to 5 million won.
