News Update: Sentencing in Primary Election Case
On November 20, 2024, authorities finalized sentences for 45 individuals involved in a primary election. These individuals were imprisoned for periods ranging from 4 to 10 years. The most severe sentence was given to Tai Yaoting, while four others identified as “ringleaders” received significant penalties. Eight people declined to appeal their sentences, indicating a belief that their circumstances would not change.
Deng Bingqiang, a prosecutor, stated that there was sufficient evidence against the defendants. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these actions should not be classified under democracy. Officials identified 11 defendants engaging in illegal activities, though some expressed regret and requested consideration for early release.
The ringleaders, including Ou Nuoxuan, were sentenced to 6 years, benefiting from a 20% sentence reduction. Lin Jingnan received a 5-year sentence. Yang Yueqiao, associated with the Kuomintang party, was sentenced to 8 years. The Kuomintang admitted guilt for three defendants, while prosecutors did not present evidence for reduced sentences.
On September 6, several pro-democracy activists did not receive leniency despite their social contributions. Zou Jiacheng was sentenced to 7 years, as was He Guilan, who also did not plead guilty. Political figure Joshua Wong was involved in various cases and did not receive sentence reductions. Mao Mengjing faced sentencing linked to an official relationship.
There is ongoing concern from multiple nations regarding the sentences. The Commissioner’s Office of Foreign Affairs has been accused of interfering with justice due to these concerns. The handling of this case is noteworthy in the current political climate, with many political leaders now focusing on economic improvement rather than past conflicts.
