NEW YORK (AP) — Yanic Truesdale, best known for his role as Michel Gerard in the hit series “Gilmore Girls,” is currently starring alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg in Amazon’s new ballet-themed dramedy, Étoile. The Quebecois actor, who divides his time between Los angeles and Montreal, expressed enthusiasm for the project and his co-star.
“It’s wonderful,” Truesdale said, describing his connection wiht Gainsbourg. “We have become friends.”
from Stars Hollow to the Paris Opera
Following his success in “Gilmore Girls” (2000-2007), Truesdale has appeared in several high-profile television projects alongside actors such as Melissa McCarthy, Sigourney Weaver, Lauren Graham, and Alexis Bledel.
In Étoile, Truesdale plays Raphael, the deputy director of the Paris Opera. He said he was thrilled to work with Gainsbourg.
“We get on really well,” he stated.”I already had immense respect for her work, and now we are friends in real life. I couldn’t have asked for anything better!” Truesdale has also appeared in the Quebec-based series Guys and Let Go.
Gainsbourg recounted a story about her daughter’s reaction to the casting, saying she “almost passed out” upon learning her mother would be working with the actor from “Gilmore Girls.”
“It’s cute! It’s always a pleasure,” Truesdale responded. “Teenagers, it’s very rare that they don’t know ‘Gilmore Girls.’ Even in New York, at the premiere of Étoile, there were fans waiting for me at the exit of my hotel. How do they know where we are, I don’t know? The passion of young people is so real. I am asked to take selfies and sign posters. It’s nice, but always surprising.” Truesdale has been working in television and film for 36 years.
Reuniting with Familiar Faces
When asked if working with producers from “Gilmore Girls,” who are also involved in Étoile, guarantees success, Truesdale responded cautiously.
“I think success is never a guarantee in this profession,” he explained. ”But,I am very happy to rework with them because they are people who have been in my life for 25 years and those who gave me my first chance with a character who marked me and who marked viewers.Working with people you know is rare and precious.”
A ‘Cry of the Heart’ for the Arts
Étoile’s premise involves the Paris Opera Ballet and the New York City Ballet exchanging their most talented dancers to attract new audiences and save their respective institutions.
Truesdale describes his character as the right-hand man to Gainsbourg’s character, responsible for finances and “miracles.” He characterizes Raphael as “passionate, committed, and determined,” viewing the series as “a cry of the heart to the survival of art and dance.”
“I find this series significant, and the timing extraordinary, while culture is in danger with all the budget decreases,” Truesdale said. “We no longer give enough value to culture, but imagine a minute a life without art!”
The show has generated significant buzz, with premieres in Paris and New York. It aims to be accessible to those unfamiliar with dance while offering an immersive experience for enthusiasts.
The series, filmed in both Paris and New York, blends English and French, highlighting the mix of cultures.
“there were lots of languages spoken on the set,” truesdale noted. “It was traveling, while traveling for real. It was wonderful to rub shoulders with so many cultures and dancers. I also have immense respect for their work. I saw them rehearse, and I got lots of dance friends.” He added that his fondest memories were from scenes shot at the Paris Opera.
As he awaits confirmation of a second season of Étoile, Truesdale mentioned “a film project in the air” and another in development in Quebec, though he could not provide further details.
Étoile, an eight-episode series, is currently available on Prime Video.
