The New York Yankees have parted ways with veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman, a move that came just a day after the team made a important splash at baseball’s trade deadline.Stroman, who is in his 11th major league season, was released on Friday, ahead of the Yankees’ series opener against the Miami Marlins. He is owed approximately $5.7 million.
A Difficult Decision for the Bronx Bombers
yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the tough nature of the decision. “Obviously, that was tough today,” Boone stated. “The perception around Stro for us, if you got to be around him the last couple of years, he’s an awesome competitor.” This sentiment highlights the respect Stroman commanded within the clubhouse, despite his recent performance and the team’s roster decisions.
The Yankees’ flurry of activity on Thursday saw them acquire All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval, along with utilityman José Caballero, through separate trades. To make room on their 26-man roster for these new additions, the team also optioned right-handers Ian Hamilton and yerry de los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/wilkes-Barre.
stroman’s Contract and Injury Woes
Stroman signed a two-year deal worth $37 million with the yankees before the start of last season. He is owed $5,709,677 of his $18 million salary for the current year. Any team that signs him will only be responsible for a prorated share of the league minimum salary, which is $760,000.
His contract also included a conditional player option for 2026, valued at $18 million. This option could have been exercised if Stroman had pitched 140 or more innings in the 2025 season. However, injuries have significantly impacted his playing time this year. Stroman has only pitched 39 innings so far, having missed 2.5 months due to left knee inflammation.
A Professional Departure
Despite the circumstances, Boone reported that Stroman handled the news of his release with professionalism. “Had a good interaction with him,” Boone shared.”I feel he’ll be a guy I’ll stay in touch with for the rest of our lives. Appreciative of him.”
Stroman’s final outing for the Yankees came on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays. He earned the win in his ninth start of the season, allowing four runs and six hits over five innings. His season record stands at 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA.
