Yann LeCun, Meta’s Chief AI Scientist, to Step Down
What Happened
Yann lecun, Meta’s Chief AI Scientist and a leading figure in the field of
artificial intelligence, will be stepping down from his role at the end of
2024. He founded Meta’s Basic AI Research lab (FAIR) in 2013 and
has overseen the company’s AI strategy since then. LeCun will return to
full-time teaching at New York university, where he has been a professor
since 2003.
lecun’s departure comes amid growing tensions with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg
over the direction of the company’s AI efforts. While zuckerberg has
focused heavily on large language models (LLMs) like Llama and a vision of
“superintelligence,” LeCun has expressed skepticism about the capabilities
of LLMs and the feasibility of achieving true AI.
Who is Yann LeCun?
Yann LeCun is a renowned computer scientist best known for his pioneering
work in deep learning, convolutional neural networks, and computer vision. He is one of three researchers who won the 2018 Turing Award, frequently enough
referred to as the “nobel Prize of Computing,” for his contributions to
the field.
Before joining Meta, LeCun held research positions at several institutions,
including the University of Toronto and the École Normale Supérieure in
Paris. He has published extensively in leading AI journals and conferences
and is a highly respected figure in the AI community.
The Disagreement with Mark Zuckerberg
LeCun has consistently argued that LLMs, while useful for certain tasks,
lack the ability to reason and plan like humans. He believes that a
different approach to AI, focused on building systems that can understand
the world and learn in a more human-like way, is necessary to achieve true
intelligence.
This viewpoint increasingly clashes with Zuckerberg’s strategy, which
centers on developing increasingly powerful LLMs and pursuing the ambitious
goal of “superintelligence.” In July 2024, Ars technica reported that Meta’s AI superintelligence effort
bears resemblance to its failed Metaverse project.
Such as, in May 2024, LeCun responded to an openai researcher’s
discussion about controlling ultra-intelligent AI on X (formerly Twitter) by
stating that researchers first need to create a system even slightly
smarter than a house cat before worrying about controlling systems smarter
than humans. (See his post on X).
