Yao Liming Supports Death Penalty but Strict Conditions Should Be Imposed
Judicial Nominee Faces Tough Questions on Death Penalty and Political Ties
Taipei,Taiwan – Yao Liming, nominee for deputy president of Taiwan’s Judiciary Yuan, faced intense questioning from Kuomintang legislator Yang Qingying during his confirmation hearing today.Yang pressed Yao on his stance on the death penalty, a contentious issue in Taiwan. While Yao expressed support for capital punishment, he emphasized the need for strict conditions and safeguards to prevent wrongful executions.
“It is forbidden to violate people’s right to life,” Yao stated. “If the state makes mistakes, as people make mistakes and kill people, then the state will not be responsible.”
Yang further inquired whether Yao would overturn existing constitutional rulings on the death penalty, specifically referencing Judgment No.8,a landmark case that upheld the constitutionality of capital punishment. Yao declined to comment, citing the need to remain impartial and avoid prejudging future cases.
“Of course I will make decisions based on professionalism and conscience,” Yao said. “But I cannot reveal my inner convictions before a case.”
The questioning also delved into Yao’s political background, specifically his role as chairman of President lai Ching-te’s campaign office. Yang questioned the appropriateness of nominating someone with close political ties to such a crucial judicial position.
Yao defended his qualifications, highlighting his experience in political assessment and electoral survey analysis. He also insisted that he had severed all political ties with President Lai since his nomination.
“If I were President Lai’s staff, I would recommend the nomination of professional constitutional scholars,” yao stated. “But I believe I am a suitable candidate.”
The full Legislative Yuan Committee will vote on Yao’s nomination in the coming days. The outcome of the vote will have meaningful implications for the future of Taiwan’s judiciary.
