New Jersey-based band Yawn Mower is paying homage to the cult classic film “The Big Lebowski” with the release of their latest music video for the single “New Years At The Airport.” The video, directed by the band’s own Biff Swenson, offers a playful and nostalgic nod to the Coen brothers’ iconic film, promising a unique visual experience for fans.
The single “New Years At The Airport” is a preview of Yawn Mower’s upcoming album, I Just Can’t Wait To die, scheduled for release on august 15th via Mint 400 Records. To celebrate the album’s launch, the band will host a record release show in Asbury Park on August 30th, followed by a series of east coast tour dates throughout September.
A Bowling Alley Inspiration
The concept for the “New Years At The Airport” music video emerged organically from a band outing. ”We took a speedy band picture holding our bowling balls in front of the lanes,” shares Mike Chick, explaining the genesis of the idea. “That started us thinking we should come take some good pictures at the bowling alley, which turned into let’s film a video at the bowling alley, which finally led to let’s film an homage to ‘The Big lebowski’ at the bowling alley.” this spontaneous inspiration transformed into a full-fledged tribute to the beloved film.
Crafting the Lebowski Vibe
Biff Swenson elaborated on the creative process behind the video, highlighting the band’s affinity for “The Big Lebowski.” “We constantly have 2 or 3 old-school tube-televisions going at our rehearsal space, muted of course,” Swenson shared. “‘The Big Lebowski’ is a group-wide favorite that we return to often.”
The decision to film at a bowling alley provided a perfect backdrop for the homage. “When mapping out music video ideas for this album cycle, the thought of a bowling alley stood out early on,” Swenson explained. “It gave us the ability to change up the scenery from the other videos while allowing us to present less like “a band” and more like a group of friends chilling on-screen.”
Swenson also discussed the deliberate pacing of the video, which mirrors the film’s distinctive rhythm.”The homage to Lebowski also gave me the ability to pace the edit differently too. This video moves a bit slower than the others since some one-take shots force me to hang on things longer than I’m used to for most music videos.”
Connecting the Visuals
Beyond the thematic elements, swenson ensured the video felt cohesive with the band’s broader album aesthetic. “I purposely incorporated Mike’s illustrated icons, the color palette dots, lyrics on screen, and VHS static transitions to connect it to the rest of the videos for this album too,” he stated. ”We wanted this to feel part of the whole as much as we wanted it to be the outlier. The dude abides!”
With its unique blend of musical talent and cinematic homage, Yawn Mower’s “New Years At The Airport” video is set to captivate fans and newcomers alike, offering a memorable glimpse into their artistic vision ahead of the album’s release.
