Individuals who received the fractional dose of the yellow fever vaccine in 2018 should seek out a UBS (Basic Health Unit) to complete the vaccination schedule, as directed by the São Paulo State Health Department, following recommendations from the Ministry of Health.
At the time, due to the increasing number of yellow fever cases, health authorities decided to fractionate the vaccine to ensure greater population coverage. “In 2018, we implemented the fractional strategy as there wasn’t enough vaccine for everyone,” explains Regiane de Paula, health coordinator at the CCD (Disease Control Coordination) of the São Paulo State health Department.
A study by Fiocruz (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) showed that the fractionation of the vaccine was equivalent to the protection of the conventional dose for at least eight years, meaning until this year. Regiane reinforces that anyone with doubts about whether or not they should receive a new dose should consult a UBS.
According to the Health Department, 57 cases of yellow fever were confirmed in the state, with 34 deaths, in 2025.
