According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), a yellow weather warning for intensive rainfall, localized significant precipitation amounts, and thunderstorms has been issued for seven regions across Bulgaria for August 26, 2026. The incoming weather front is driven by a shift in wind direction to the west-northwest, bringing cooler air and potentially dangerous conditions to the northwest and the Rila-Rhodope mountain areas. The weather alert covers seven specific regions: Vidin, Montana, Vratza, Sofia Region, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, and Smolyan. Conditions in these areas include potential hail alongside intense downpours, particularly along the Danube river basin and the southern mountainous tracts.

Temperature Forecasts and Regional Variations

Maximum temperatures across the country are expected to reach between 29°C and 34°C, with temperatures in Sofia hovering around 30°C. The Black Sea coast will remain mostly sunny with only temporary increases in cloud cover after noon and almost no precipitation. Morning winds from the east-southeast will shift to the west-northwest by the end of the day, ushering in cooler air. Maximum temperatures along the coast will range from 27°C to 29°C, with sea water temperatures at 25°C to 26°C and a sea wave action of about 3 degrees. In the mountainous areas, variable and often significant cloud cover will trigger afternoon brief showers and thunderstorms. In Stara Planina and the Rila-Rhodope region, rainfall will be temporarily intense and heavy, accompanied by moderate to strong west-northwest winds that will cause temperatures to drop slightly. At an altitude of 1,200 meters, the maximum temperature will reach about 23°C, dropping to around 17°C at an altitude of 2,000 meters.

Outlook for the Rest of the Week

Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, air masses will remain unstable as a relatively cool air stream continues to press in from the north-northeast while temperatures slightly rise from the southwest. Thursday will feature predominantly sunny weather with developing cumulus rain clouds and brief localized showers and thunderstorms in the northeastern parts of the country. Daily temperatures on Thursday are projected to climb to between 30°C and 35°C under a temporary west-northwest wind. By Friday, unstable conditions will shift primarily to Central Bulgaria, bringing maximum temperatures down to a range between 27°C and 32°C.
