Widespread Weather Warnings Issued Across Bulgaria

Much of Bulgaria is under a yellow weather warning as a cold snap brings hazardous conditions, including strong winds, fog and snowfall. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued alerts for a significant portion of the country, impacting travel and daily life.

As of today, Monday, February 2, 2026, a yellow code warning is in effect for 16 regions due to strong winds and icy conditions. A separate yellow warning covers dense fog in 10 districts, including Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Veliko Turnovo, Rousse, Silistra, Sofia-city, Pernik, Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad.

The NIMH warns that temperatures will remain below average overnight and through the morning, before beginning to rise by midday. Overnight temperatures are expected to range from -10°C to -5°C, with some areas in Northern Bulgaria and higher elevations in Western Bulgaria potentially dropping to -14°C. In the southwestern parts of the country, temperatures could reach 0°C, while Sofia is forecast to be around -8°C.

Tomorrow, conditions are expected to remain cold. Cloud cover will be broken, becoming more frequent, and fog is likely in the plains during the morning. A weak, and in eastern regions, moderate wind from the east-southeast is anticipated. Temperatures in most of the country will remain below 0°C, with maximum temperatures between -5°C and 0°C. Southwestern Bulgaria may see temperatures reach up to 7°C, and Sofia around 0°C.

Heavy Snowfall Forecast for February 1st

A Code Orange warning of dangerous weather was in effect for 24 of Bulgaria’s 28 districts on Sunday, February 1, 2026, due to forecast heavy snowfall. The remaining four districts – Vidin, Sofia city, Pernik and Kyustendil – were under a Code Yellow warning for potentially dangerous weather, also because of snowfall.

The meteorological bureau reported that snowfall began in southwestern Bulgaria on Sunday morning and spread across the country by evening. Snow accumulation of 15-20 cm was expected in southern Bulgaria, and 10-15 cm in the north. A moderate, briefly strong, north-easterly wind was also forecast for eastern Bulgaria, bringing cold air and snowstorms.

In the mountains, significant cloud cover was expected, with light snow possible on the highest parts of the Rila and Pirin mountains. A moderate to strong westerly wind was forecast, with temperatures at 1,200 meters around 2°C and at 2,000 meters around -2°C.

Coastal Conditions

Along the Black Sea coast, variably cloudy skies were predicted, with a moderate to strong wind from the north-northeast. Maximum temperatures were expected to range between -2°C and 1°C, slightly higher south of Bourgas. The sea water temperature is currently between 6°C and 8°C, with wave heights of 2-3 meters.

On Tuesday, conditions along the coast are expected to be cloudy and rainy, with snow possible, particularly on the southern coast.

The Road Infrastructure Agency has appealed to motorists planning trips in the coming days to ensure their vehicles are prepared for winter conditions.
