The official SANA agency reported that “5 Syrian soldiers were killed in an Israeli strike” targeting a military site in the countryside of Damascus near the Syrian-Lebanese border early Friday.
According to the agency, citing an unnamed military source, “the Israeli army launched an attack targeting a military site in the countryside of Damascus at 1:35 a.m. on Friday, killing 5 soldiers. and wounds of others.”
The Israeli military had not claimed or denied responsibility for the attack until after the report was published.
On Thursday, the Mutariba border crossing, which connects the territories of Syria and Lebanon, was bombed, which the Israeli army said was aimed at “preventing the transfer of means of war to Hezbollah”, while Syrian television reported that 8 people were wounded.
The Israeli military added in a statement on Thursday that the bombing was carried out by warplanes and that it “targeted infrastructure used by Hezbollah to transport means of combat.”
Yad Aloush, director of the Mutariba crossing, said eight people had been injured so far in the bombing, including four customs officials and four immigration workers, Syrian TV reported.
Instead, a security source told Al-Hura that several civilians were injured as a result of the Israeli raid.
On Thursday, Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamiyah told Reuters that the Israeli strike hit Syria from “a small bridge that forms a crossing into Lebanon,” adding that it was “not immediately known if the crossing is still usable.”
