Yeung Ho-Bei-yin: The civil service establishment will maintain a zero-growth target and apply technology to improve work efficiency – RTHK

Civil Service Recruitment Update

As of November 18, 2024, the number of civil servants currently stands at 173,000, which is about 20,000 below the established number. The Secretary for the Civil Service, Ms. Yeung Ho-Bei-yin, confirmed that the government will maintain its zero-growth target. She emphasized that various departments will work to improve efficiency by simplifying procedures and using technology.

Some members have raised concerns about the hiring process, questioning if the authorities are being selective in their recruitment or trying to cut government spending. They worry that a lack of staff could hinder the implementation of policies. Ms. Yeung reassured the public that this is not an effort to save money. She explained that some applicants did not meet the required standards, leading to their non-selection.

This approach aims to ensure that the civil service remains capable of fulfilling its duties effectively.
